comrades in arms of Wexford man Pat Somers turned out in force to congratulate him on his impressive run of wins in national kickboxing competitions.

Commandant Enda McDonald, OC of E Company, 3rd Battalion, led the other officers, NCOs and privates, as well as some new recruits at Wexford Barracks, in congratulating Patrick, who has been in the defence forces for almost 20 years.

Patrick, from Kellystown, Drinagh, was a member of a squad from the Carlow Kickboxing Club, winning an impressive eight All-Ireland medals at this year's WAKO Kickboxing Ireland Senior Championships in Monaghan, a qualifier for the World Championships which take place in Dublin in November.

He won gold in the Veterans' Light Contact Division and a silver in the Points Sparring Division.
