Former senator Lisa among contenders for Fergie's seat

former senator and practising solicitor Lisa McDonald is to contest the vacant Fianna Fail seat on the county council following the death of Cllr Fergie Kehoe.
'I will be going for it,' she told this newspaper.
Lisa is likely to be up against other party stalwarts including former minister Hugh Byrne's daughter Aoife, who recently told Wexford town cumann that she was interested, Fergie's brother Sean, Billy Morris, from John Street, Michael Cogley, from Murrintown, and Fergie's widow Frances, from Mannix Place, who has indicated she is interested.
Party insiders said Fianna Fail had not yet decided the mechanism for filling the late councillor's seat - it could either be through interviews or through a convention.
'It will be decided by party headquarters,' said a well-placed source, 'If it goes to a convention Lisa will win. If it is done through an interview process anything could happen.'
Fergie Kehoe had been in line to be the next mayor of Wexford, a position that is likely now to go to Fine Gael's Frank Staples, when the mayorality takes place at the end of this month.
