A group of locals went above and beyond their target when they held a darts tournament in aid of the homeless in The Mocking Monck recently.

The tournament, which was the brainchild of Mag O'Brien and John Dempsey, saw €246 being raised for the cause. The proceeds will be donated to Ozanam House and Wexford Women's Refuge early next year along with proceeds from Wexford March for the Homeless events.

According to John Furlong from Wexford March for the Homeless, the event had a great turnout, with plenty of fun and good food to be had. However, he said that the main aim of such events is to spread awareness.

'We need to make people aware of the problem of homelessness and show them that it is not getting any better,' he explained. 'As a taxi driver, I see it a lot. I see families being brought from b and bs to pubs to hotels. There is no accommodation for them.'

Along with Denise McCormack, John organises several March for the Homeless walks in Wexford each year. Their latest walk, which took place from Redmond Square on Saturday, attracted huge support from people in Wexford.

'We hope to surpass what we raised at our April event,' said John, who explained that the funds have yet to be counted.
