Fundraising efforts are underway to save a Wexford playschool from closure.

Páistí Beaga in Our Lady's Island will be forced to close down in January unless it gets immediate financial help.

A group of supporters have come together to rescue the playschool, a not-for-profit operation set up by local people seven years ago.

A St. Stephen's Night disco will be held in the Danby Lodge and all money raised will go to Páistí Beaga which receives no State funding apart from ECCE payments for individual children who qualify.

The fundraising campaign began with a recent 'Cup Songathon' based on the action song craze inspired by the film 'Pitch Perfect'.

A large group of children and parents took part in the event which was held in the local community centre.

The next fundraiser is the Danby Lodge disco with music by Premier Disco and headline act Borderline.

Páistí Beaga was established as a limited company but a move is now underway to have it registered as a charity.

'It's a very good resource in the community and much-needed,' said Mignon Fuchisati, one of the playschool directors.

'It is the only playschool in Our Lady's island and we have received great feedback from the local primary school about how well-prepared the children are.'

The playschool is run by manager/teacher Lorraine Rankin with the help of a qualified volunteer.

'A number of circumstances have combined to create a financial shortfall. We don't have as many ECCE children as we did last year,' said Mignon.

Local people have been very supportive since news of the playschool's threatened closure became known.

'They realise the value of it,' said Mignon.

Páistí Beaga currently has 16 children enrolled. The cost is €8 per morning. More children have applied to enrol after Christmas.
