ROUSING CHEERS greeted Ireland's latest sporting star, Gráinne Murphy, when she arrived into New Ross on Monday evening for an official civic reception.

The young swimmer who sensationally clinched a silver medal and broke yet another Irish record at the European Championships in Budapest was greeted by crowds of well-wishes in the town's swimming pool car park.

Gráinne was led to her supporters with great pomp and ceremony as members of the New Ross and District Pipe Band, followed by a guard of honour from the Swimming Club, paraded her to the stage.

Cathaoirleach John Dwyer told the crowds that he was confident ceremonies like this would become regular events as she continues to enjoy sporting success.

With a plethora of presentations made to the 17-year-old, her parents and coach by the Town Council, including a specially commissioned painting of Gráinne in action, the most significant accolade to be afforded to her was the New Ross 800 medallion.

Gráinne is the second only recipient of the medallion, with President Mary McAleese presented with the first ever one in 2007.
