Group welcomes pylon climbdown

County Wexford Energy Action Group has welcomed the news that Eirgrid has chosen to adopt an alternative option to high-voltage overhead power lines for the GridLink project, following a review at the behest of the Department of Energy, Communications and Natural Resources.
The new technology being used is known as 'series compensation'. This would be the first time it will be used on the Irish transmission grid. It is a widely used, advanced, smart grid technology that will enable more power to flow through existing lines, and so does not require new 400 kV overhead lines.
'This is good news for communities in Wexford, who have worked hard over the past two years with elected representatives to resist further development of overhead pylons across Wexford. We insisted from the very start that Eirgrid's process was fundamentally flawed as all alternative options were not explored and the need for grid upgrade in the south east was not proven.'
