Horeswood native Reverend Billy Caulfield was recently ordained a Deacon for the Diocese of Ferns at St Patrick's College in Maynooth.

The qualified chef, who is in his mid-thirties, said that he found his vocation to the priesthood quite late. He qualified as a chef after school and greatly enjoyed cooking but soon discovered that he had a calling elsewhere.

It was the words of St Catherine of Sienna - 'If you are what you should be you will set the world on fire' - that made him question the direction he had chosen in life. Following a pilgrimage in 2006, he began to give a life in the priesthood serious thought.

In the following years, he spent some time on retreats and in Australia and his feelings about joining the priesthood remained strong. Upon arriving home to Ireland, he started in the parish of Clonard on a pastoral year before later being accepted by Bishop Denis Brennan to study for the Diocese of Ferns in Maynooth in 2011.

The Diocese of Ferns wish Billy every happiness and blessing now and in the future.
