MINISTER Brendan Howlin says that immediate action will be taken by the government to get permission for the dredging of Rosslare Europort, which is badly silted up following the winter storms.
The minister was commenting during a visit with Labour local election candidate Bernie Mullen and Mayor Cllr George Lawlor to the port, where they met officials including Port Captain Aedan Jameson.
Captain Jameson said the port needed to be dredged as soon as possible but that first permission had to be obtained from government bodies including the Department of the Environment.
'We have to work through a process and I hope that the spread of this has stopped. The issue for us is getting through the environmental issues, and we're working through them as quickly as possible,' Captain Jameson said.
