WARM tributes were paid at Maggie May's in Wexford recently as friends, family and colleagues of James Flood gathered to wish him well in his retirement.
James has decided to call it a day after 31 years working for the Borough Council at Crosstown Cemetery. James was foreman of the team who care for the graveyard, and over the years did a fine job ensuring the facility was well maintained and looked its best.
Among those with warm words about James, was Cllr Fergie Kehoe who spoke on behalf of the council and his colleagues. 'He was excellent from the point of view that he more or less knew where everyone was buried,' said Cllr Kehoe. 'He had all the information for people coming in search of relatives and for information on family trees.'
'Jim was also the first person that people called to get a grave opened, when there was a bereavement,' he added. 'Whoever gets his position will have a tough job following in his footsteps. The knowledge Jim held over the years has been amazing'.
The night was organised by Jimmy Carty and James's other colleagues, and a great evening's chat and reminiscing was enjoyed by all.
Cllr Kehoe also paid tribute to James's wife Joan and their children for supporting him over the years. Many of his family members and friends as well as colleagues were in attendance on the night.
James thanked everyone. A keen GAA follower and Manchester United supporter, no doubt he will use some of his new found free time in Wexford Park or Old Trafford.
