Cannabis does huge psychiatric damage, particularly in young people, a district court judge warned last week.
Judge Gerard Haughton made the statement at Gorey District Court last week following a case involving a large amount of cannabis where he heard arguments in mitigation.
'Time after time, I'm told, "it's only cannabis, it's not heroin,"' he said, emphasising he was not being critical of the solicitor before him.
'Cannabis, particularly in younger people in their late teens does huge psychiatric damage, more so than heroin, more so than cocaine,' he added. 'In my experience, it's easier to get people off cocaine or heroin than cannabis. It does enormous psychological damage.'
