MORE than 100 truckers took part in County Wexford's first truck run on Sunday, with drivers from throughout the island of Ireland taking part.

Con Morris, secretary of the Wexford truck run committee, said drivers from as far away as Ennis, Limerick and even Northern Ireland, drove to Wexford to take part in the run, established to raise funds for the Friends of Wexford General Hospital and its MRI Scanner appeal.

The drivers assembled at the old Renault compound in Kilrane, before heading for New Ross and Enniscorthy, where they had an hour's break and refreshments, before heading on to Gorey, where they circumvented the town, and drove back along the coast run, across Wexford Bridge and parking on the Quays where they made quite a spectacle.

'There was great entertainment there and while the weather was against us it was a great event and very well supported,' said Con.

He said that while he didn't yet have the exact figure, the 60-mile plus run had 'raised thousands' for the MRI appeal.

'We would like to thank all our generous sponsors,' he said, adding that minds were already being focused on a similar fund-raising truck run next year.
