Late Sam MacConnell worked for Wexford newspaper

THE former Irish Times journalist Sean MacConnell who died last week, worked on the Free Press in Wexford during his early career.

Ms. MacConnell died suddenly at his home in Dublin last Wednesday at the age of 66.

The County Fermanagh native began his career in the Roscommon Champion newspaper in 1967.

In 1968, he moved to the Roscommon Herald and in 1970 to the former Free Press, in Wexford where he worked as a reporter until he joined the Irish Press in Dublin.

He joined the Irish Times as a senior reporter in 1986 and became the newspaper's Agriculture Correspondent in 1989.

He became Midlands Correspondent in 1997 and returned to the newsroom in Dublin in 2001.

He retired from the newspaper last year.

Mr. MacConnell is survived by his wife, Pat, daughters Siobhán and Kate, son Eoghan and his grandchildren.
