A man in his 50s is in a serious but stable condition in Wexford General Hospital after a fire broke out in his home on William Street at lunchtime on Monday.

Gardai said the fire, which appeared to have been confined to a bedroom at the house, broke out at around 1.30 p.m.

The cause of the blaze at the flat in the William Street house is still unknown but foul play is not suspected. Initial reports suggest it may have been caused by a cigarette. The 54-year-old man, who has not been named, was rescued from the house by members of the fire service. CPR was performed at the scene before the man was rushed to hospital by ambulance where he received further medical treatment.

The extent of his injuries was not known at the time of going to press but his condition was downgraded from critical to stable late yesterday afternoon.
