RESIDENTS living near Whitemill shopping centre met Cllr George Lawlor and road safety officer David Codd recently to discuss safety issues at the car park.

'There are no pedestrian crossings serving this shopping area despite the fact that it is heavily used by the people who live near it,' said Cllr Lawlor.

He said that as well as a plan being drawn up to make access safer, he had asked the management company CBRE for the results of safety audit that had been carried out following the death of a pensioner who was struck by a car in the car park earlier in the year.

'It seems from standing there that there is very little traffic regulation,' said Cllr Lawlor.

He said the National Ambulance Service had told him that three ambulances had been sent to accidents involving pedestrians in the car park over the past three years.

'This seems very high and there is a situation that needs to be resolved,' he told this newspaper.

The management company could not be reached for comment.
