Memorial wreath laid in Friary cemetery
FRANCISCAN FRIARS and townspeople buried in a long-forgotten graveyard in the grounds of Wexford's Friary, were remembered during a special wreath-laying ceremony.
The original plan was to celebrate Mass outdoors on the cemetery site which now forms part of the garden of the Friary Hall but inclement weather forced everyone inside.
The service was organised to commemorate all those buried in the graveyard from which the headstones were controversially removed during the 1970s.
A wreath was laid at the memorial stone which was erected later as a remedial gesture to mark the historic burial place dating back to the 1700's
Fr. Brian Allen, a former Wexford Friar now based in Athlone who was back in town to lead the St. Anthony Novena, celebrated the memorial Mass in the Friary Church.
