mURRINTOWN was transformed into a model village recently for a fund-raising event with a difference.

Short of funds needed to build a new graveyard, members of the community last year staged a small-scale model exhibition, the event so successful that they held a much-larger exhibition in the community centre this time around.

The original idea for the exhibition came from Margaret Coney, who enlisted the support of Kevin Carr, for the latest event.

Fifteen different groups, from throughout the county and the region took part along with a couple of trade sellers.

Models included an impressive display of Land-Rovers, aircraft, tractors of all shapes and sizes, remote-controlled diggers and an old-time restored pitsaw.

'The graveyard is full.. we have purchased a new plot and now we need to develop it,' said Kevin. The exhibition has major support from local businesses which provided food on the day as well as equipment needed to stage it. So far the organisers raised almost €1,700 and are already planning to reprise the event next year.
