NATURAL gas is flowing for the first time around Wexford, bringing with it the promise of major cuts in energy costs and securing 1,000 jobs in the town.

Celtic Linen, Coca-Cola, Danone, Wexford Creamery, Wexford General Hospital and Irish Pride in Taghmon are among the first to benefit, although many more are signing for gas connections following a recent meeting for local businesses arranged with the Chamber of Commerce and Gas Networks Ireland.

Domestic customers will also be able to benefit from the new supply, with large areas of the town due to be connected later this year and many more in 2017. Peter Scallan, manager director of Celtic Linen, said 1,000 jobs, not only as his plant, but among suppliers throughout the town and county, had been secured as a result of the project. 'Without gas we could not continue in Wexford,' he said.
