Nursing home gets €1.7m

Wednesday January 25 2012

KERLOGUE NURSING HOME in Wexford earned € 1.7 million from the Government's Fair Deal scheme in 2010.

Kerlogue which was established by Philip and Paula Stafford of Drinagh was one of the highest earners in the country under the scheme.

Figures that were provided by the HSE and published by the Sunday Business Post show that Kerlogue was in the top ten homes to benefit last year from the Nursing Home Support Scheme also called Fair Deal.

The scheme was established by the former Minster for Health, Mary Harney in 2009. Under Fair Deal, nursing home residents who sign up for the scheme, pay 80% of their weekly disposable income, 5% of their non- cash assets and up to 15% of the value of their homes ( after their death) towards the total expense of their care.

The State pays the remainder of the bill, apart from the cost of non- essential services.

Figures show that the majority of nursing homes in Ireland charge a ate of between € 600 and € 1,200 per week.
