Pair of Slaneysiders make Irish 'rich list'
THERE WERE two Wexford entrants on the 300-strong Irish 'rich list' in last weekend's Sunday Independent.
In at 27 were ' Bert Allen and family'. Described as 'beef barons' by the paper were the owners of the Linden Food Group, Mr Allen and his brother Maurice, who are valued at an estimated €350 million.
One of the largest food and meat processing operations in the country, it includes Slaney Foods.
Mr. Allen's main earner is pinpointed as the Bewley's Hotel Group, which he built up before selling to Red Cow Inn owner Tim Moran for €560 million two years ago.
The well-known Stafford family are listed at 51 with an estimated wealth of €180 million.
'Wexford's merchant prince dynasty have been continuously at the forefront of Irish business longer than almost any other family group,' claimed the Sunday Independent.
'Starting as shipping and coal distributors, the family businesses (now headed by Mark Stafford) has diversified into retail through the purchase of Lifestyle Sports.'
