PAUL KEHOE

I would love to see Enniscorthy Town Council staying as it is but we have to reform it - and that's the way it is.

This is about making local government work far better. This is about giving the tax payer better value and bringing local government into the 21st century. I was never on a town council, so I come from a completely different perspective. I believe that people will have excellent representation once the reform is implemented and money will still be spent on Enniscorthy town. Representation of Enniscorthy district on Wexford County Council will probably increase by one or two members. The present system needed reform. We are in a situation where we are unable to afford spending on administration rather than where it matters, on footpaths and libraries and so on. There will be huge savings, with different ways of doing the work. Over the past 20 to 25 years Governments have promised to reform local government, to make it more efficient and user friendly. Now 115 of the 116 recommendations from the review group put together by Minister Phil Hogan are being implemented.
