Pricy childcare putting strain on grandparents

The lack of affordable childcare means that many grandparents are being left to care for grandchildren, said Wexford Councillor Davy Hynes.
According to Cllr. Hynes, grandparents in Wexford and across the country are being forced to 'take up the slack' due to the high cost of childcare services.
'People are left stuck,' he said. 'They can't afford to pay for childcare and if the grandparents don't step in, the parents may not be able to work.'
Cllr. Hynes also mentioned the strain that this can have on grandparents, who have grandchildren using their resources.
'Most may not mind but other grandparents will,' he said. 'Some people are going to lose out.'
Cllr. Hynes made these comments following a news story regarding a young mother from Cork who was forced to move back in with her parents and grandparents due to the high cost of living in the city.
