Protect 'hard hit' elderly with Minister for Older People - Byrne
THE country's growing ageing population necessitates the appointment of a Minister for Older People, according to Cllr Malcolm Byrne.
Cllr Byrne said the minister would ensure the coordination of services to best meet the needs of our senior citizens.
Cllr Byrne said: 'Elderly people have been hit hardest, particularly those on fixed incomes.'
He said more step down facilities are needed for patients who require a further period of convalescence before being discharged home or being identified as requiring a Long Stay Bed in a Community Nursing Unit.
'While HIQA are trying to ensure improvements in district hospitals, it is reducing the number of beds. We will need a lot more step down beds. If we don't address this problem the number of people in hospitals will grow.'
Cllr Davy Hynes seconded the motion which was unanimously supported.
