Wexford Housing Action Group have presented a public petition to Wexford County Council, demanding the provision of emergency accommodation to tackle the growing problem of people sleeping rough.

'With the approaching winter, it is unacceptable that anyone, let alone families with children, the sick or the infirm, should be forced to sleep in cars or outdoors,' said the group's PRO Aislin Wallace.

Members of the group collected signatures in support of the petition on the Main Street in Wexford last weekend and handed them in to the housing department at Council headquarters in Carricklawn on Monday morning.

Ms. Wallace said she is aware of a number of people currently sleeping rough in Wexford town and a couple who are living in a tent at the Raven in Curracloe.

'We are calling on the Council to provide enough hotel and B&B spaces for all homeless people,' she said. 'In the longer term, we need an incease in the availability of medium term and permanent social housing,' she added.

Wexford Housing Action Group can be contacted on 089 2211661 and are also on Facebook.
