Put off the road

A CASTLEBRIDGE man was put off the road for two years at Gorey District Court after he pleaded guilty to a drink driving charge.

Mark Purcell (37) of Apartment 6, Millers Rest, Castlebridge, was stopped at Gurteencurragh, Gorey, on June 3, 2008 and a test taken later gave a reading of 126 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood. The court was told he had two previous drink driving convictions which dated back to 2000 and 2001. His solicitor said he had a long history of alcohol abuse and addiction but was now free of drink and attending Aiseiri. He was applying for a course in Waterford IT to become a counsellor. 'He has turned a corner,' said Ed King.

Judge Earley said he had considered a custodial sentence, but because of the considerable time since the last conviction, and because of what Mr. King had said, he had decided to fine him €350 instead, and ban him from driving for two years.
