Over one acre of trees and grassland in the Rocklands area was badly burnt after a fire broke in recent weeks.

One unit of Wexford Fire Service was called to the area at 9.20 p.m. after a passer-by noticed some bushes on fire. The incident was quickly brought under control.

Wexford Fire Service were unable to determine the cause of the fire.

The incident was one of many outdoor fires that the fire service attended in recent weeks. On August 10, one unit was called to a gorse fire in Ballymoney. The cause was undetermined.

On August 12, Wexford Fire Service were called to a forest fire in Raven's Wood. The suspected cause was arson.

Arson was also the suspected cause of another gorse fire on August 13 in New Ross.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer Colm McGrath said that gorse fires are particularly common during dry periods as things as small as a cigarette butt or barbeque can ignite a fire in dry foliage.
