A LECTURE on the role of the Irish in the Battle of the Somme will be given at Wexford Historical Society's next lecture at St Michael's Centre in Green Street at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, September 14.
Dr Derek Smyth, who holds a BA (Hons) in History from Queen's University and a MA in History from the University of Ulster, will examine the role of Irish formations and individuals in the great battle of 1916. The struggle on the Somme has burned itself into the collective memory of many in these islands. The outcome of the battle and the unprecedented casualty figures would influence the course of British, Irish and European history during the following century.
Derek Smith is author of 'Journey of Remembering' and is a battlefield tour guide over several years.
