Rubbish callers 'reddened' ears

Most rubbish bins were finally emptied this week after the hazardous bad weather.

WEXFORD County Council staff had their 'ears reddened' last week by homeowners, anxious to ensure that their post-Christmas refuse collections would run on time.
'We had hundreds upon hundreds of calls. Our ears are reddened,' said a staff member of the Environment section said last week.
Crews from Wexford County Council were deployed over the weekend to collect bins in Wexford town, some of which had not been picked up since before Christmas.
'Bins that were missed on Saturday after New Year were given a priority for collection over the weekend. It was recycling week in Wexford this week, so it wasn't too bad. But the people who have not had a bin collection since before Christmas were a priority,' he said.
He said that some of the lorries had difficulty negotiating roads because of the inclement weather conditions. 'It's not so much the snow but the ice on the roads and footpaths. We have men who have to walk on paths to get to bins, and they are lethal,' he said.
He added that while members of the public are frustrated by the lack of service during the freeze, it is 'not a life or death situation'.
'At the end of the day it's a recycling rubbish collection. It's not worth risking the health and safety of our people over it,' he said.

Meanwhile independent refuse collection company, Wastepal were making all of their town collections but had difficulty collecting rural routes in the middle of last week.
