THE people of Gorey have been stunned and saddened at the sudden death of 19-year-old Chris Martin on Sunday morning last. The talented and hugely popular young rugby player suddenly took ill at his home at Grattan Court at around 6 a.m. when he suffered an asthma attack followed by a suspected heart attack.

Despite the strenuous efforts of his family to assist him, and a swift response from the nearby Caredoc, an ambulance, and a defibrillator from Gorey Garda Station, he could not be saved.

Chris was the beloved youngest son of Michael and Bernadette and adored brother of Rachel, Tommy, and Simon. Just last June, he completed his Leaving Certificate at Gorey Community School and went on to study Earth and Environmental Science at University College Cork.

A gifted athlete, he was described as having embodied the ethos of Gorey Community School when he was a student there.

'He was my right-hand man. We did everything together,' said his older brother Tommy. 'He was the life of the party. He was literally my best friend. He was everything. He was kind. He was the greatest kid you'll ever come across.'

He said that so many people have spoken so highly of him. Chris loved rugby and, when he went to UCC, he joined the UCC Buccaneers.

His Funeral Mass takes place at 11 a.m. at St Michael's Church, Gorey, today, Tuesday. Prayers will be said at his home beforehand, from 10 a.m.
