Speeding drivers ignore warnings during 'enforcement marathon'
GARDAI detected upwards of 700 speeding drivers in a 24-hour 'speed enforcement marathon' between 6 a.m. last Thursday and 6 a.m. Friday.
Among the drivers caught speeding in the pan-European initiative was a motorist doing 107 km/h in the 80 km/h zone on the R733 at Tracystown East, Cleariestown.
Another driver was caught by Gardai travelling at 127 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N11 at Johnstown South, before Arklow.
Garda Chief Superintendent Aidan Reid thanked motorists for their cooperation in thinking about their speed - legal and appropriate for the conditions - during the enforcement period, but pointed out that 'despite the widespread publicity, some drivers have failed to change their driving behaviour'.
'Speed kills,' he warned, urging drivers to continue to comply with speed limits and to drive safely.
