St Peter's College relaunch their annual from 1916 in time for centenary celebrations
A St. Peter's College annual dating from May 1916 offers a fascinating glimpse into life in the college and its surrounds during the year of the Easter Rising.
Staff, students and local residents alike can now hold on to this piece of history themselves as the school have reprinted 1000 copies in honour of this year's 1916 centenary celebrations. The annual, which features articles, photographs and advertisements from the era, was recently launched by Bishop Denis Brennan to a large crowd in the Tower in St Peter's College.
The annual contains a wealth of information about the clergy and features articles penned by such luminaries as William Henry Grattan Flood, who wrote a complete history of the Presidents of St Peter's College. A piece by Right Rev Abbot Columba Marmion concerns the Benedictine community at Edermine. Another section focuses on sport and includes photographs of the hurling, soccer and GAA teams from the time. It is also filled with photographs of past pupils, including graduation photos which, coincidentally were taken in the same place that St Peter's take these photos today. Advertisements from several local businesses are also included and many of these businesses have survived to this day.
Due to the age of the original annual, the pages could not be scanned for the reproduction. Instead, a team of photographers from Trinity were tasked with taking shots of each page to ensure that the reprint was of good quality. The launch was attended by Fr Aodhan Marken, former principal Pat Quigley, V Rev William Howell, Rt Rev Mgr Joseph McGrath, staff and students. Everyone took great interest in flicking through the pages from the past, before wandering through an extensive exhibition highlighting aspects of life in St Peter's College in 1916.
The annual is now on sale for €15 (originally 1s) from the school office and copies are already selling out fast.
