staff at Xtra-vision Wexford hit back at the news that the company was set to close by organising a sit-in at their store in North Main Street.
News broke on Wednesday that all 83 stores in the Republic and Northern Ireland were due to cease trading following the appointment of a provisional liquidator by the High Court. The closure would result in the loss of approximately 580 jobs, seven of which are in the Wexford store.
Speaking mid sit-in, a spokesperson for the Wexford staff said that they were 'gutted' to hear the news.
'The reason we are doing this is so that the appropriate people get their redundancy. They were due to get it next week and now that the liquidator has been appointed, this has been delayed,' they said.
Staff commenced their sit-in at 12.30 p.m. on Wednesday, locking their door to the public and posting signs up on the front window. According to the spokesperson, they received a huge amount of support from pedestrians and long-time customers.
