Students' Charity Ball raised €2,000 for refuge
Wednesday February 03 2010
A CHARITY ball organised by a group of transition year students, has raised over €2,000 for Wexford Women's Refuge Loreto student Hayley Connor and 11 of her classmates hosted the event in the Riverbank Hotel last Friday night. Over 200 young people turned up and everyone had a ball. All the proceeds will go the Women's Refuge in Distillery Road which provides shelter for female victims of family violence and their children.
Instead of presenting the money in one big cheque, the girls plan to divide it into individual vouchers for Dunnes Stores, Tesco, Pettitt's and World of Wonder.
The vouchers, in different amounts, can be given to women staying in the refuge to buy clothes, food or toys when they need them.
'We got the idea from the people who run the refuge. That way, the money can be given directly to the women', said Rachel O' Brien, one of the charity ball organisers.
The event was organised as an independent project by the Loreto girls who wanted to help the work of the refuge.
