Sub Aqua Club start spring cleaning
Wednesday April 02 2008
WEXFORD Sub Aqua Club kick-started the National Spring Clean campaign when they undertook a clean-up in Kilmore Quay recently and Wexford County Council are urging others to clean-up their local areas.
The club, which was formed in 1971, has an active club with 35 members and dive off Kilmore Quay.
They were the first sub aqua club in Ireland to become a Coast Care Group and carry out regular underwater clean-ups, carrying back from their dives whatever they can safely manage.
The waters around Kilmore and the Saltees are exceptionally nice and large littering is more abnormal than the normal,' said Elaine Walsh, Environmental Officer with Wexford Sub Aqua Club.
We come across aluminium cans, fishing weights and old rubber gloves, which we then carry back and dispose of properly.
On Saturday we focused on the rocks around the harbour where small items such as plastic bottles are often washed in by the tide. We have a beautiful coastline and we should all play our part in protecting it,' said Elaine.
Philip Murphy, Kilmore Quay's Harbour Master, praised the work of the club and said they are an example to us all'.
Hugh Maguire, Environment Officer with Wexford County Council, said that the National Spring Clean campaign is all about involving communities to help protect and enhance their local communities'.
Just choose an area nearby to clean up and get together with family, friends, neighbours and colleagues to make your event successful. This is an opportunity to be part of the solution not the problem,' he said.
