In a shock announcement last Friday Deputy Liam Twomey announced he would be stepping down from national politics.
Deputy Twomey said he was stepping down for family reasons adding it had been a huge honour to represent the people of Wexford.
He said that his wife's recent illness had made the family re-assess their priorities and with three young children and a doctor's practice something had to give. Deputy Twomey said that while Taoiseach Enda Kenny was 'clearly disappointed' with his decision not to seek re-election it was a decision he understood.
