A Tesco worker who struck a colleague and broke his jaw during a work row agreed to pay €2,000 in compensation.

Jonny Hyland (39), address given as Donoghue's, The Duffry, Enniscorthy, admitted striking John Tyrell at the supermarket in Wexford.

The incident occurred in December 2012 when Hyland was working as a supervisor in the store.

He called Tyrell into his office where a row ensued in which he used excessive force, as he now accepted.

The injured party went first to Wexford General from where he was referred to St James' Hospital in Dublin.

The court was told that the accused man, father of two children, was demoted by his employers as a result of the row.

However, he has since regained deputy manager status and is now working in Gorey.

Tesco paid for the injured man's treatment.

The judge noted the undertaking to pay the €2,000 before imposing an assault conviction and setting a fine of €500.
