THE Kilmore Quay lifeboat and the Rescue 117 helicopter were called out on Tuesday night after the crew of a scallop boat made a Mayday call to say their engine room was filling with smoke.
However, the three man crew did not have to abandon their vessel, the 'Mia C', which was later towed back to Kilmore Quay, after the helicopter illuminated the area while emergency was being assessed.
The RNLI said the smoke was caused when a hydraulic pipe burst, sending a stream of fluid on to the hot engine. The engine was shut down and the boat was subsequently taken under tow by the life boat, which got back into port at around 12.15 a.m. on Wednesday. The callout took place at 10 p.m.
The sea conditions were calm and there were no injuries reported.
