TWO men were arrested on penal warrants following a joint garda operation with customs officers in the Brownswood area near Enniscorthy last Friday.

A garda spokesman confirmed the arrests, but said he could not comment on reports that a halting site had been searched during the operation.

'It was a joint operation with customs,' said the spokesman.

Cllr Paddy Kavanagh said he was aware of the garda operation and the council 'was doing all it could' after a number of caravans from outside the county were moved on to a private site in the Brownswood area.

'I can't say any more than that,' he said.

'There is genuine concern locally about people who have moved into the area recently,' said a local resident, who asked not to be identified.

'There have been quite a few garda raids around here and some cars have been taken away,' he said.
