Two men have died after their light aircraft crashed on Mount Leinster this afternoon.

The men, believed to be in their 50s and 60, died after their plane, a Cessna light aircraft, crashed in the Blackstairs commons area around lunchtime on Sunday.

Both men are reported to be from County Meath and the plane took off on Sunday morning from Ballyboy in Co. Offaly.

The incident was reported by a hillwalker at 2.40pm.

Emergency services including Rescue 117, gardai and the South East Mountain rescue team rushed to the scene and located the wreckage. The bodies of the men are expected to remain at the scene until Monday morning because the area is so difficult to access by foot.

There are no reports of any distress signal being sent out before the crash.

The Air Accident Investigation unit is investigating the accident.
