NEW Ross councillors received full support for their collective motion calling for funding for a roundabout at the Campile road junction in Marshmeadows to be expedited.
They said the roundabout is in the County Development Plan and taking into account the volume of traffic and in particular the large number of articulated lorries using the road, the works need to be funded urgently. Cllr Larry O'Brien said: 'This has been going on for a number of years,' mentioning the hundreds of vehicles from three haulage companies within one kilometre of the main road using it daily. 'You can imagine all these vehicles trying to cross the N25 and the speed of the traffic going to Waterford. It doesn't happen quickly.'
Cllr Willie Fitzharris lent his voice to the motion, while Cllr George Lawlor said: 'It's a vital piece of infrastructure.' Cllr Michael Whelan said: 'It's wasting the time and money of haulage companies,' while Cllr John Fleming said the haulage companies are big employers in the county. Director of Services for Roads Eamonn Hore said planning has been granted and compulsory purchase order request has been confirmed for works on the N25 at Mannion's pub which is far ahead of plans for the Marshmeadows roundabout.
