'We need more clarity' on the housing system
There is no way of knowing where people are on the housing list according to Cllr Davy Hynes.
The councillor raised this issue at the meeting saying that 'something should be done' about the problem. With the current system, councillors are unable to give information to those on the list regarding when they should expect to receive housing.
'The old system was straightforward,' he said. 'We need more clarity on this.'
According to Director of Services Tony Larkin, the person who has 'the greatest need' for a house when one becomes available will receive an offer. 'The old system is gone,' he said.
Cllr Deirdre Wadding also expressed her concerns regarding the housing list, saying that there are 'mixed messages' regarding who takes priority for a home.
'We need to know what the priorities are,' she added.
According to Cllr Wadding, the issue of homelessness in the town is becoming 'worse and worse' and many people are 'on the brink' of losing their homes.
'I have women coming to me who have children and they don't know where they will be sleeping that night,' she said. She said that they needed to 'make a stand' on the issue. However, she said that her concerns were no reflection of those in the housing section and commended them for the work that they have done considering their resources.
