Wexford bakery buys new premises for €680,000
ryans Bakery in Spawell Road has had an office block and warehouse complex in Whitemill bought on its behalf, but has no immediate plans to move there.
Billy Ryan said it could be between three and five years before the business expands from its existing premises on the Spawell Road.
The complex at Whitemill - two office blocks and a warehouse, which had been in the hands of NAMA - went under the hammer at €680,000 in an auction at the Whitford House Hotel conducted by Michael O'Leary, from the Enniscorthy-based Sherry Fitzgerald O'Leary franchise.
'It opened up at €280,000. There was lots of interest in it.. we had 35 in the auction room, including three or four solicitors and three or four other auctioneers,' said Mr. O'Leary, 'it was good to see a packed auction room and a sign of a strengthening market.'
Billy Ryan and his brothers Tim and Thomas have been operating the bakery for the past 30 years and sell into County Wicklow, Carlow town, Waterford and all of County Wexford. The company employs 33 people between drivers and bakery men.
Billy said that the company wanted to expand, to modernise its equipment and ovens, and needed a secure location for three- to five years down the line when it was in a position to move.
With property prices still way off their peak in County Wexford it was considered a good time to buy.
Ryans Bakery was founded by the late Thomas Ryan, managing director of Frank O'Connor's Bakery, on North Main Street, where Boots is now.
