It was a proud day for Na Fianna Boxing Club in Mannix Place as two of their female fighters got into the ring at the Leinster Boxing Championships in Kildare.

Nicole Scallan O'Brien from Castlebridge took home the gold when she went up against Saoirse Brennan from St Brigid's in Kildare. Although this is only the 13-year-old's second year of boxing, she won on unanimous decision on three rounds.

Meanwhile, Nicole Scallan who is also from Castlebridge went up against Mia Robbins from Gorey. Although she was beaten on a split decision, 13-year-old Nicole fought a tough battle and came home with a silver medal.

Commenting on the win, club coach Phillip Browne said that it was a great boost for the club.

'It's particularly great to see girls taking part, especially at that young age,' he added.
