A motorist had to be cut free from his car after it struck the railway bridge on the R730 at Ferrycarrig early on Saturday morning.
Two units of the Wexford fire brigade were called to the incident by the gardai at 1.15 a.m.
The passenger had got out unaided but the driver was trapped and required medical treatment at the scene of the accident because of the extent of his injuries.
'The fire brigade needed to remove the driver using cutting equipment and removed the roof and doors to access the driver,' said a spokesperson. The driver had suffered serious leg injuries and two fire fighters assisted the ambulance crew to bring the accident victim to hospital.
