Wexford Half Marathon entry fee reduced by €5
THE WEXFORD Half Marathon, which made a very successful debut last year, has reduced its entry fee to try ensure that as many people turn out again this year and are not sent running scared by the recession.
Organiser Eoin Ryan reckons the half marathon, sponsored by Pettitt's SuperValu, is the first road running event in Ireland to make a flat price reduction off the entry fee.
The entry fee is down €5, from €48 to € 43. 'The move is aimed to make participation more affordable for people who have been affected by the downturn in the economy,' said Eoin, from Castlebridge.
'Last year's inaugural event was a huge success and it would be a shame if people were alienated due to the circumstances outside of their control,' he said.
He pointed out that there has been a surge in the numbers of people running recently, similar to the 1980s, when employment was at similarly high levels.
Eoin himself made the move into organising athletic events when he was made redundant in 2008. 'Many out of work people have taken to running to keep physically and mentally fit,' he said.
The Wexford Half Marathon, which attracted 1,000 runners last year, takes place on the May Bank Holiday weekend. For further details see www.wexfordhalfmarathon.com
