Wexford man aiming to become 'The Apprentice'

Wednesday September 24 2008

ONE OF the go-getters featured in Ireland's new series 'The Apprentice' is Wexford's own Ronan Whitty, a 27-year-old systems analyst now working with Ryanair.

Ronan is one of the Whitty family of Whitford House Hotel fame, and cut his business teeth working in all aspects of the family trade before pursuing an MBS in strategic management planning.

Ronan is the youngest of the Whitty siblings, coming behind Shane, Eilis and Ger in the familial pecking order. He is the son of Kathleen and the late Jim Whitty, who started the Whitford House Hotel empire over three decades ago.

On Monday night Ronan was introduced on TV3 as one of 14 of Ireland's 'brightest and best', who were prepared to battle it out to become an apprentice to Irish entrepreneur and philantrophist, Bill Cullen.

In last week's episode the boys' team, dubbed 'Dynamo', batted it out against the girls' 'Phoenix' team by selling fruit on Moore Street to make a profit.

The girls narrowly came out on top, and Ronan found himself as one of the three facing the boardroom vote-off. However, he escaped the axe, as Mayo's David Neary was sent packing.

This week Ronan's sister, Eilis said the family were very proud of how he had appeared on the first episode of the programme. 'He got on very well. He was worried about how the programme would be edited, but he came across brilliantly. Throughout this he only wants to keep his integrity. He sees this as a challenge,' she said.

She added that while her brother has trained as a yield analsyt and worked as a sales and marketing consultant, he has been in the business all his life.
