Councillors were dancing in their seats with excitement after the Wexford hurlers' victory Kilkenny, none moreso than outgoing chairman Paddy Kavanagh who spoke of a memorable win over the old enemy.

Cllr Kavanagh sympathised with Kilkenny on their loss, before congratulating Wexford hurlers on their great win.

Cllr Kavanagh said: 'We will all say we haven't won anything yet, but from a Wexford point of view to beat Kilkenny twice in one year is memorable, especially for all the young people who haven't seen results like this before. It's a welcome thing and for the county, in general, there is a feelgood factor - even in the hunt for tickets. It was a really good weekend for Wexford.'

Cllr Kavanagh also paid tribute to the management and support staff.

Cllr George Lawlor congratulated everyone involved in organising bringing almost 20,000 people to Wexford Park. 'It appeared seamless and was an excellent job,' Cllr Lawlor said.

Former Wexford manager Cllr Tony Dempsey congratulated the backroom team and the hurlers on their victory. 'I also want to thank Wexford County Council for helping out the GAA and all sports, in general.'

Cllr Dempsey said a recent survey found that less than 50 per cent of young people in Wexford play any sport. He urged Wexford hurlers and fans to keep their feet on the ground, 'and beat Galway!'.
