Wheelers have Irvine geared up for 40th
WEXFORD Wheelers are celebrating their 40th anniversary this year in some style.
On November 9 in the Riverbank House Hotel, the club are holding a dinner dance for current and former members and the other cycling clubs of County Wexford.
The club are delighted to have Martyn Irvine (pictured) the United Health Care team professional cyclist, as guest of honour.
Martyn is the reigning UCI World Champion in track cycling, having won the 'Scratch event' in Minsk earlier this year. He became the first Irishman to win gold in a track event in 116 years.
He is also a strong possibility to be riding the Giro D'Italia next year, which starts in Belfast and has a stage ending in Dublin.
Club secretary Michael Noonan said the club was thrilled to have a cyclist of Martyn's standing and the current World Champion attend the anniversary celebrations.
'The club has gone from strength to strength this year. With numbers of members now reaching close to 100 and the revived Stafford's Wholesale Wexford two-day race being run, after a 20 year break. So to then have Martyn, who is also a hot favourite for a medal at the forthcoming European Track championships, it really does top off a great year,' he said.
The club are hoping to see as many of the current and former members as possible, with members from other clubs also welcome along on the night to reminisce about races and tours past.
The night will include a three course meal, entertainment, with a talk from Irvine and entertainment til late.
The following day Martyn will be leading a tour for the junior and youth members for the Wexford clubs.
