Work set to begin on landmark building
WORK on restoring Wexford's Ballast Office to its former glory is due to begin shortly.
'We just got prices in on that and we will be restoring that building,' County Manager Eddie Breen announced at a meeting of Wexford County Council last week. The council was recently granted €100,000 for the refurbishment of the Ballast Office and it is hoped to award the contract to a local company.
According to the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage records, the building is 'one of the earliest surviving purpose-built civic institutions in the locality' and 'markings to some of the stone work represents a further point of social interest having connections with the maritime legacy of the town'.
