The first fun run in aid of Castlebridge National School was a massive success last week.

Organised by the Parents Council at the school, the inaugural run raised about €850 for the school.

Principal Ed Lyons said they had been delighted with the support they received on the day.

'The whole event was very successful and we were delighted with how it went. For our first outing it was great and everyone had a ball. We are definitely going to run it once a year from now on if not twice a year.

'There was a great sense of community spirit and we had great local support too.

'The money raised will go towards the school development fun. We have plans to build a learning support area which will include two learning support rooms, a full sized classroom and also upgrade our PE facilities. Depending on how much money we raise we might also add some extra PE facilities on the grounds.

'The Parents Council have been fantastic and they aim to raise between €30,000 and €50,000 over the next two years which will be a massive help.

'On the day of the run there were 108 taking part, the oldest of whom was 74 while the youngest was in senior infants so it really was a day for everyone.

'We started at the village green and finished up at the school taking in a 6km route. Afterwards everyone enjoyed refreshments in the school. We had been blessed with the weather and we also got great help from Darren Shiggins who is local to the area but also has run a number of runs before.

'Pat Durack from Maxol in Ardcavan started the race for us. The school is teaming up with Maxol and they are organising an ongoing fundraiser for us which will be in place in the store in the coming weeks.'
