The fifth County Match Play Quiz championship was completed recently and resulted in a third successive victory for The Mountaineers/Dire Straits, a team with strong connections to the Mountain Bar, Newline Road, Wexford.

An initial qualifying table quiz produced the top eight teams to contest the finals, run under the 18-hole match-play format used in golf. The Mountaineers team headed the qualifiers and then moved through the final stages with some style. Team members are Brian Nolan, Margaret Daly, Kieran Daly and Phil Murphy.

In the quarter finals they beat St. Mary's GAA Club; Browne's of Bishopswater beat The Porter House, Castlebridge, in a great contest; in a Derby between two Pike Bar teams, Vampires 2 beat the Fuctards, and El Scorchio from Wicklow beat Clonard Badminton Club.

In hard fought semi-finals, the Mountaineers overcame Browne's of Bishopswater (Bobby Bent, Liz Dunphy, Tony O'Mahoney and his son, Chris). El Scorchio knocked out Vampires 2 from the Pike Bar, made up of four schoolteachers (Joe Cummins, Andy Lehane, Adrian Power and Alan Murphy).

The final was a nip-and-tuck affair for a long way before The Mountaineers edged ahead of El Scorchio at the end. The Wicklow team (Alan O'Callaghan and three members of the O'Rourke family) have been great supporters of the annual quiz and were in their first final.

The quiz is organised annually by the St. Mary's of Maudlintown GAA Club, mainly by Trevor Doocey who acts as quizmaster, and Martin O'Connor who had set all the questions for the first four years but this time was a participant. This year the questions were set by John French, who did an excellent job. The event was run at Wexford Golf Club.

The Mountain Bar is leading the way in Wexford quizzing at this time.

Another team from the Nicky Hayes pub won the DMP/Guinesss Wexford Festival rural pubs quiz title last year.

On that team were Brian Nolan, John Healy, Mary and Anna Hayes.
